Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826)Thomas Jefferson was one of the great thinkers of the American Revolution...author of the Declaration of Independence as we know it (he extensively revised a much weaker document), Ambassador to France, and President of the United States - Jefferson was revered in his own time, and his opinion on politics and philosophy was often sought by his peers. Jefferson is truly one of the most influential men in American history. In 1782, the marquis de Chastellux wrote that in the wilds of Virginia, he had found: "An American, who without ever having quitted his own country, is musician, draftsman, surveyor, astronomer, natural philosopher, jurist, and statesman." Jefferson's accomplishments cover a wide variety of territory, from his interest not only in the sciences but also in the arts; from his days in the public eye as politician, to his private life with his family; and from his life on the American frontier, to his diplomatic career in Paris.
