About The ArtistJames Moon FeehanJames Feehan's work explores a fantasy world rich with narrative images. The playful juxtaposition of animals, people and exotic locales repeatedly reveal an undedying sense of whimsy in his work. His paintings and prints, often filled with a sense of mystery, embody a richness and depth with strongly evocative figures realized out of a dramatic color field. His work is filled with mystery and often seems rooted in another time. Many of his paintings rely on an unusual method developed by Feehan as a way to infuse his work with a sense of spontaneity. He begins by creating an image on an aluminum lithograph plate, which he then prints as a mono-print. This image becomes the foundation of the painting, which he embellishes and enriches, with layers of lively color and definition. Feehan often incorporates images from childhood, folklore and mythology into his richly pattemed paintings. Repeated images of ladders and fish create a familiar iconography that links each painting to the next, while the juxtaposition of images and vibrant use of color create a magical world that is as enticing as a child's fairytale. Feehan studied at Boston University and privately with William A. Smith. His works have been featured in solo and group exhibitions at museums and fine galleries throughout the east coast including the Allentown Art Museum, Woodmere Art Museum, New Jersey State Museum, Monclair Museum and in national exhibitions at the National Arts Club in New York, Chicago Art Fair and Carnegie Mellon among others. He has been honored with more than fifteen awards in national and regional shows for both his paintings and prints. His works are included in numerous private and public collections including Aspen Fulfillment Service, New Hope. Publishing, United Hospital Supply, Abington Hospital, Deborah Hospital and others. "I think my work explores the mystery of spirit and place and hopefully evokes a feeling of connectedness to things before and imagined." "When I am asked about the subjects of my paintings I generally say they are portraits of us. We are all the same - travelers on new journeys, fools in love, saints and sinners. I hope my paintings lead the viewer on a rich journey of discovery and hopefully strike a chord of familiarity- a recognizing of a shared soul."
